Butterflies of the University of Ioannina campus

The Laboratory(BCL) at the Department of BET coordinates the national volunteer program of the butterflies of Greece (citizen-science).

This initiative was launched by our University as an outward-looking action to connect the University with the society, aiming at the protection of nature and butterflies. The University of Ioannina, also through our Laboratory, is the official Partner of Butterfly Conservation Europe for Greece.

If you love nature, are looking for an opportunity to walk in the countryside in the spring and are interested in learning about the species of this beautiful group, come and learn more.

Two invitations for you:

Α. Get-to-know-you meeting. Great Wednesday 16 April 17.30-19.00. Connect with us at https://meet.google.com/xwq-cqrj-ieb

to get to know each other, learn about this initiative for the butterflies of Greece from the citizens, and ask any questions you want. You can, of course, stay for the members’ meeting as well. It is open to any interested citizen who wants to participate. At the end of the message the agenda of the meeting which will be open to the general public

Β. Photographing the butterflies of the city – especially for the members of the University.

  • I made a poll to indicate when you can in the first week after the holidays (29 or 30 April or 2 May), if your commitments allow. I hope the poll will also collect e-mails, because if it’s cloudy or rainy or cold (<15oC) it’s cancelled. If you’re interested, two or three hours away from computers and responsibilities… sign up: https://doodle.com/group-poll/participate/dNW0PWDe. Please register by April 16 so we can book it.
  • I will be at the main cafeteria of the ELKE, to have coffee with you at 10.30.
  • Afterwards, at 11.00 we will take a short walk to the meadows to see and photograph butterflies for an hour.
  • Those who have time can follow me to the forest of Dourouti to do a butterfly walk together (we will be finished at 14.00).
  • Comfortable closed shoes, camera and ready!
  • If there are too many of us, I’ll do it twice.

The link to the event will also be posted on fb: https://www.facebook.com/BCL.Ioannina and in the Workshop news if you miss it.

All our actions are voluntary, both from the coordination team at the University of Ioannina and from the people. With passion and good mood. Already last year colleagues from the University were interested and I was very happy. This year, we will also meet in person to get to know this colourful group.
