GREEN ROOMS IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS & BIOCLIMATIC UPGRADES OF PUBLIC OPEN SPACES (CRES)
Integrated Design of planted rooms (Municipality of Piraeus, Vrilissia, Kifissia, Pavlou Mela, Chaidari)
Scientific Officer: Dr. Varras Gr. If. Professor
Natural object:
Within the framework of the project, integrated studies of planted rooms for school complexes were developed (construction study of an extended type planted roof, planting study, hydrological study (expected stopping of rainwater), irrigation study and bioclimatic proposal evaluation). For the Municipality of Piraeus, the studies concerned 7 school complexes (1st Primary, 9th High School, 2nd & 5th High School – Lyceum, 35th & 36th Primary Schools, Gymnasium-Lyceum of Kastela, Rallios Academy). For the Municipality of Vrilissia, the studies concerned 5 school complexes (1st Gymnasium, 1st Lyceum, 3rd Gymnasium, 3rd Primary, 4th Primary). For the Municipality of Kifissia, the studies concerned 7 school complexes (1st Gymnasium-Lyceum, 2nd Gymnasium, 2nd Primary, 4th Primary, 7th Primary, 8th Primary and Primary School of Nea Erythrea). For the Municipality of Pavlos Melas, the study concerned the EPAL. For the Municipality of Chaidari, the studies concerned 6 school complexes (2nd Gymnasium, 2nd Lyceum, 4th Gymnasium-Lyceum, 14th Elementary, 3rd Kindergarten and 10th Kindergarten).
Results:
With the approval of the results of the evaluation of the program (August 2013) begins the implementation of green rooms in schools, kindergartens, kindergartens, conservatories, cultural and cultural centers, swimming pools in many cities and neighborhoods throughout the country and in administration buildings. . The Scientific Officer of the relevant project of ELKE, Dr. Varras Gr., President of the AAT department together with a group of OP members and associates of the department prepared a total of 23 proposals for local authorities throughout the country, of which 21 were approved and in fact with a very good ranking. The total amount of projects for local authorities whose study was prepared by the University of Ioannina amounts to € 3,308,870.27.

Summary of a selected study:
The study concerns the integrated design (technical interventions, planting, irrigation, hydrological effect, bioclimatic effect) for a planted roof at the Stavroupolis EPAL with a total area of 3,500m2.
Delivery of the study
According to the study, the installation of a green roof in the building under study, can lead to:
reduction of the annual thermal load for the whole building by 2.4%
reduction of the annual thermal load for the floor that is in contact with the green roof of the building by 13.8%
reduction of the annual primary energy consumption for underfloor heating in contact with the planted roof by 4108 KWh
reduction of the annual cooling load for the whole building by 11.8%
reduction of the annual cooling load for the floor in contact with the green roof of the building by 9.7%
reduction of the annual primary energy consumption for cooling the floor in contact with the planted roof by 2595 KWh
reduction of the total annual primary energy consumption for heating and cooling of the floor in contact with the planted roof by 6702 KWh or by 11.9% compared to the current situation.
In addition, the intervention contributes to the improvement of the microclimate of the external environment of the building, thus improving – in addition to the obvious energy gains – the feeling of thermal comfort for the users of this building but also for the residents of the area in which it is located.
